Wallace Wattle's The Science of Getting Rich Workbook Edition

Wallace D. Wattles’ (1860–1911) book The Science of Getting Rich was first published in 1910. His thoughts and words are a product of the New Thought movement of the 19th century, of which Phineas P. Quimby was one of the earliest movers. The New Thought movement embodied religious ideas, such as the monistic theory mentioned in Wattles’ preface to this book, which holds that Divine, creative energy permeates all things in the universe. The movement opened up new ways of looking at thought and experience, and the power that individuals have over their own lives.

One key term in the book is Wattles’ use of Substance, which he describes as original, formless, thinking, intelligent, and primal. This Substance permeates all things, is the essence of all things, and responds to our thoughts. It comprises a conception of God, or the ultimate, pervasive power by which God moves in the universe.

Another key concept is the Certain Way—Wattles’ encapsulation of the four main points of the book—namely, (1) mental image or vision, (2) faith, (3) purpose, and (4) gratitude. As you read this book, you will see these four ideas or principles discussed again and again. The Certain Way inculcates both a peculiar and particular way as well as a sure way to obtain true wealth.

When I read it for the first time, The Science of Getting Rich had a moving effect on me as I realized that the four elements of the Certain Way were prominent virtues in the life of every truly successful man or women with whom I was acquainted.

I hope you thoroughly enjoy the book, as I did, and begin today to incorporate the Certain Way into your life by answering and applying the questions offered in this workbook edition.
